Campaign themes

2014

Malik listed the following issues on his campaign website:[4]

  • State pensions
Excerpt: "I support creating a professional management environment for the Kentucky Pension system by requiring Requests for Proposals (RFP) from a minimum of three (3) qualified Financial Management Companies...I support fully funding public pensions through tax reform and spending cuts."
  • Taxes
Excerpt: "I would have voted for the Beshear tax reform proposal even though I have reservations on exemptions proposed for certain signature industries such as the bourbon industry, equine-related products, and pharmaceuticals for food animals (#1 pages 22 and 23). Simplicity and fairness require not favoring one industry over another. Market forces should determine winners and losers not tax policy."
  • Charter schools
Excerpt: "Having Charter schools as a main source of public education would drain resources away from the public schools. I see Charter schools as laboratories for continuous educational improvement."
  • Teachers and administrators
Excerpt: "Schools need objective measures defining good teachers from bad teachers...Principals should teach 1 class per year. The purpose is to keep the principals in touch with current teaching methods."
  • Same-sex marriage
Excerpt: "I support marriage equality."
  • Unions
Excerpt: "I oppose right to work legislation."
  • Abortion
Excerpt: "Abortions should be rare but legal. Abortion breaks my heart. But I will never legislatively impede a woman's tough decision to seek an abortion."
  • Gambling
Excerpt: "Casino gambling at Churchill Downs."
