Biography

Simon Hargus lives in Parkersburg, West Virginia. He earned a doctorate in physical therapy from Ohio University in 2000 and a master's degree in healthcare administration and management from Western Governors University in 2017. Hargus’ career experience includes working as an owner and director with First Settlement Physical Therapy.[1][2]

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?

I grew up in my district and passionately believe that our schools are the foundation of Our community. I am a small business owner (130 employees) with a background in Healthcare Administration so the Opioid Crisis and the many interconnected issues surrounding is also a strong passion.Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many[5]

My mother started our family business. She's an immigrant from India that moved here with no money and no connections. Her determination and courage is truly inspiring.[5]

What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?
To think of the job as someone who is there to listen to people and then go to their capital and help them. Be prepared, study, work hard and forget the rest. The job is not raising money or playing political talking point games.[5]
What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?
I believe in helping people and that a strong community is paramount. I have a MBA and doctorate in physical therapy and run my own business. I'm hard working and honest.[5]
What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?
To listen, study, and help.[5]
What legacy would you like to leave?
That I was a positive influence for my community and state. My father always said give more than you take in every interaction and you'll be on the right path.[5]
What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?
9/11 happened while I was in high school. That day is very vivid.[5]

Working as a counselor at the local YMCA for 2 years.[5]

Probably Christmas, so much family time.[5]

What is something that has been a struggle in your life?
Low blood sugar and finding my keys[5]
Do you believe that it's beneficial for state legislators to have previous experience in government or politics?

What do you perceive to be your state's greatest challenges over the next decade?
Jobs, opioid crisis, managing oil and gas industry.[5]
What do you believe is the ideal relationship between the governor and the state legislature?

Yes, i believe in cooperation always, but you can't compromise certain principles such as civil rights for all .[5]

Making it as party neutral as possible.[5]

What the teachers did in our state was inspirational for the whole country and to me personally.[5]
