Ribeiro ran in the 2012 election for the U.S. House to represent Illinois' 9th District. Ribeiro sought the nomination on the Democratic ticket.[4] The signature filing deadline was December 27, 2011, and the primary took place on March 20, 2012.

Incumbent Jan Schakowsky defeated Ribeiro in the Democratic primary on March 20, 2012.[1] Schakowsky will face Republican candidate Timothy Wolfe in the general election on November 6, 2012. Wolfe ran unopposed in the Republican primary.
