Sin tax

A sin tax is a tax on alcohol, cigarettes, marijuana, gambling or other services and commodities that have some social stigma. When state politicians want a new stream of government revenue, it is sometimes thought to be politically more palatable to impose a new tax on one of these commodities or services.
