Six attorneys apply for county vacancy in Grand Island

Nebraska: Six attorneys have applied for a county judge position in the Ninth Judicial District. The position opened after the retirement of Hall County Judge David Bush, who retired in May. The Ninth District consists of Buffalo County and Hall counties.[1]

Meet the applicants

  • Jerom E. Janulewicz:
-From Grand Island, Nebraska
-Currently works with the Mayer, Burns, Koenig and Janulewicz firm
-Appointed Hall County attorney in 2000
-Elected Hall County attorney in 2002[1]
  • Stacy R. Nonhof:
-From Grand Island, Nebraska
-Has worked as a deputy Hall County public defender since 2005[1]
-In November 2010 she applied for an open Lincoln County judge position[2]
  • Gail A. VerMaas:
-From Grand Island, Nebraska
-Began working with the Hall County attorney's office in December 2003
-Earned her law degree at the University of Tennessee in Memphis
-Worked as a district attorney in Shelby County, Tennessee[1]
  • Arthur S. Wetzel:
-From Grand Island, Nebraska
-Works with the Grand Island firm Anderson, Vipperman, Kovanda and Wetzel[1]
  • Denise D. Myers:
-From Cairo, Nebraska
Works with the Grand Island firm Myers and Daugherty law[1]
  • Meredith O. Peterson:
-From Pinedale, Wyoming
-The only out-of-state candidate
-She has applied to be a judge in Nebraska at least five other times this year

3. An open position with the Nebraska Workers' Compensation Court
4. The 11th District

The Judicial Nominating Commission will hold the public hearing at 10 a.m. Oct. 12, 2011.[1]
