Sixteen women apply for Indiana Supreme Court vacancy
June 30, 2012
Indianapolis, Indiana: Before stepping down as Governor due to term limits Mitch Daniels will have the opportunity to appoint a third member to the Indiana Supreme Court as a result of the retirement of justice Frank Sullivan.[1] The Indiana Judicial Nominating Commission received twenty-two applicants for the vacancy, sixteen of which are women.[2] The commission will select three finalists for the vacancy, and then the final selection will be made by Governor Daniels.
Daniels has received pressure during his last two appointments to select a woman, as Indiana is one of only three state Supreme Courts in the nation with no female members, the others being Idaho and Iowa.[3] It is likely that that pressure will be even more intense during this appointment, as a large majority of the applicants are women.
