Recall reports

An effort to recall Skagit County Prosecuting Attorney Rich Weyrich, Auditor Sandy Perkins, and Sheriff Don McDermott in Washington was initiated in 2023. The effort was dismissed by Snohomish County Judge William Steffener for failing to meet the legal requirements for recall.[1]

Recall supporters

Petitioner Cody Hart argued that Weyrich, Perkins, and McDermott abetted and did not investigate election crimes and did not file the required bonds before taking office.[1]

Recall opponents

Judge Steffener dismissed Hart's claims by stating that there was no evidence of illegal activities or criminal intent by the officeholders targeted for recall. He also noted that the required bonds were filed but impromperly recorded.[1]

Washington allows the following grounds for recall: malfeasance or misfeasance while in office or violating the oath of office.[2] Before a recall petition can collect signatures, the grounds for recall must be considered by a superior court judge. If the judge rules that the grounds for recall meet the state requirements, the petition will be approved for circulation. To get the recall on the ballot, supporters must collect signatures equal to 25% or 35% of the votes cast for the office at the last election, depending on the office type.[3] Signatures must be collected within 180 days.[4]
