Solomon Oliver, Jr. is an Article III federal judge on senior status with the United States District Court for the Northern District of Ohio. He joined the court in 1994 after being nominated by President Bill Clinton. He served as Chief Judge from 2010 to 2017.[1]
Oliver assumed senior status on February 15, 2021.[2]
Early life and education
Born in Bessemer, Alabama, Oliver graduated from the College of Wooster with his bachelor's degree in 1969 and earned his J.D. degree from New York University School of Law in 1972. Oliver obtained a Master's degree at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland in 1974.[1]
Professional career
Oliver was an assistant professor for the College of Wooster from 1972 to 1975 In 1975, Oliver became a law clerk for former Federal Appeals Judge William Hastie in the Third Circuit Court of Appeals from 1975 to 1976.[1]
In 1976, Oliver was an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the U.S. Attorney's Office, Northern District of Ohio from 1976-1982, serving as Chief Deputy District Attorney for the Civil Litigation and Appellate divisions. From 1982 to 1994, Oliver was a private practice attorney in Wooster, OH. Oliver also served as Special Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio from 1982 to 1985. Oliver was Professor of law at Cleveland State University's Cleveland-Marshall College of Law from 1985 to 1994.[1]
Judicial career
Northern District of Ohio
On the recommendation of Senators John Glenn and Howard Metzenbaum, Oliver was nominated to the United States District Court for the Northern District of Ohio by President Bill Clinton on March 9, 1994 to a seat vacated by Alice Batchelder, as Batchelder was appointed Justice of the United States Court of Appeals, Sixth Circuit. Oliver was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on May 6, 1994 on a Senate vote and received commission on May 9, 1994.[3]
Oliver assumed senior status on February 15, 2021.[2]
