Noteworthy events

On January 16, 2023, Pena was arrested after being accused of orchestrating four shootings that targeted the homes and businesses of four separate Democratic officials. The drive-by shootings took place between December 4, 2022, and January 4, 2023.[1] [2] There were no injuries reported as a result of the shootings, and a hearing was scheduled on January 30, 2023.[3] As of January 23, 2023, Pena had not released a statement regarding the allegations.

On May 31, 2023, federal prosecutors indicted Pena on eleven counts, including conspiracy and using and carrying a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence.[4]

According to the Albuquerque Journal, two days prior to his arrest Pena was elected as a ward chairman and GOP State Central Committee member by the Bernalillo County Republican Party.[5] A statement condemning Pena's actions was added to the Bernalillo County GOP website, and the state Republican Party issued a statement saying Pena should be held accountable if he is found guilty in a court of law.Cite error: Closing </ref> missing for <ref> tag As of January 23, it was unclear if Pena would continue to serve in either party position.[6]
