Solon City Deer Culling Ordinance Question (November 2011)

A Solon City Deer Culling Ordinance Question was on the November 8, 2011 ballot in the city of Solon which is in Cuyahoga County.

This measure sought to prohibit the killing and hunting of deer within the city limits and would repeal any city laws that allow the killing of deer within the city. This measure was brought to the ballot by a successful petition drive by residents who collected 1,664 signatures, 980 were needed and 1,342 were found to be valid. Proponents of the measure noted that there are other non lethal ways to remove deer from the city instead of killing them. Though those in favor of the culling stated that deer and car related accidents had dropped significantly since the program went into effect and that the population had been reduced.

The question on the ballot:

Shall the Solon, Ohio Deer Preservation Act which would: 1. Prohibit a person from knowingly culling, hunting, killing, injuring, or torturing a deer anywhere within the City limits of Solon, Ohio; 2. Not apply to veterinarians or law enforcement officials who for medical or public safety reasons determine that the killing of a dangerous or injured deer is warranted; 3. Make violation of the Act a first-degree misdemeanor and make repeated violations a fourth degree felony; 4. Allow any resident of Solon who learns of a violation to file a lawsuit against the violator to prevent future violations and to recover a civil forfeiture of $1,000 per violation; be adopted?
