I am Sonia Nizami. I have devoted my life to the service of others, and for this reason I am running for State Representative. I have worked in progressive politics in many different positions, helped organize and been on staff for organized labor. I currently work in health care and am also a Court Appointed Special Advocate for abused and neglected children. I grew up in the Kansas City Metro area and am deeply committed to this community.
  • Quality, accessible, and affordable healthcare is every Missourian’s right. But every year Missouri families must make increasingly difficult decisions for how they prioritize spending on prescription drugs and medical bills over the basic costs of living. At the same time, the Republican-led House has left millions of federal dollars on the table meant for expanding healthcare access to Missourians. Their inaction means less healthy communities, higher premiums for those with coverage, and the loss of hospitals, especially in rural areas. As your state representative, I’ll support common sense measures like expanding Medicaid, so no Missourian is forced to choose between a decent job and keeping their healthcare.
  • Every person should have the autonomy to make decisions about their body and their life. Republicans have passed extreme trigger language, banning abortion in Missouri, even in the case of rape or incest, and only allowing termination in the case where a mother's life is in grave danger. Mothers die from childbirth in Missouri in numbers far greater than the rest of the industrialized world, and instead of promoting healthcare, Missouri legislators have placed burdensome restrictions on it. As your state rep, I will stand with women for the right to make the best decisions about their healthcare for their own lives.
  • Every Missouri child should have access to free, quality public education regardless of their zip code. As your representative, I will work to strengthen our public schools and fully fund our commitment to our kids. I will support universal early childhood education, because investing in our kids from an early age is the best way for us to invest in our future. I will also support investment in higher education and workforce training, to ensure all Missourians have the opportunity to gain the skills to compete in our economy.
There are many areas of public policy I am personally passionate about. Given recent developments, protecting a woman's right to choose is of utmost urgency. I am deeply disappointed in our state government for failing to protect our rights and our safety. They want women to carry unwanted or dangerous pregnancies to term, yet at the same time, failing to protect the children after they are born by constantly cutting Medicaid and services to children. I will be a tireless advocate for reproductive rights and and advocate for children's services.

I am also deeply passionate about protecting workers in the State of Missouri. We have some of the lowest wages in the country. Once elected, I will fight to protect and further collective bargaining and raise prevailing wages.

Public education has taken hard hits in recent years. I believe that public education should be a sanctuary, a bastion of our society. Our future depends on our children. If we cannot invest in their intellectual nourishment, then we are failing as a whole.
