Sonya Swan has been a community leader for the majority of her long residency in West Des Moines, Iowa. She graduated as Valedictorian in high school and went on to hold leadership positions in the corporate world; developing teams and educational materials. Her strength was in creatively resolving challenges and coming up with win/win solutions.

When she arrived in West Des Moines years ago, she began teaching small classes in her home, serving parents and children. Before long, she was raising her own family of 4 beautiful daughters. She home educated her children, ran food co-ops, was active in the faith community, and served as a citizen advocate at the Iowa Capitol for many years.

Using her passion for health education, combined with her community-building skills, she became an entrepreneur to support her family and built a thriving business and community of leaders. Helping others achieve their dreams and push through their obstacles is one of her many passions.

She now speaks nationally and internationally, on success principles, life skills, health and entrepreneurship. Her children inspire her every day to fight for stronger communities, medical reform, educational opportunities, environmental responsibility, and a healthier economy for all Iowans.
  • This is the time to bring civility and common sense back to our discussions. We will have a country and a planet in which our children can thrive if we leave anger and bitterness behind while cultivating a culture of compassion, dignity, honesty, integrity, accountability, self-control and respect.
  • Success is not the attainment of a goal, it is who we become in pursuit of that goal. As we work together to find new solutions, and listen to each other with the intent to understand, we will create meaningful legislation, and expand our potential in all areas of life.
  • We must protect the rights of the individual regarding life, liberty, and property, uphold the Constitution and embrace personal responsibility.
Meaningful medical reform

My very first job was at a grocery store bagging groceries. I remember the care I always took in packing each bag to protect the fragile items and the joy I felt when someone was appreciative. It made the extra effort worthwhile. Back in those days, we took people's groceries out to their vehicles as well. I always looked for ways to brighten someone's day before they drove away. Tips were always a delight to receive though never expected. This was my first glimpse that the more value I brought to the marketplace, the more I could earn.
Building relationships is crucial in any leadership position. It is just as crucial to build relationships between legislators. We must understand each other to be able to come up with effective legislation that serves the best interest of all our citizens. Relationships may help us overcome party politics which prevent the best legislation from moving forward.
One of the elderly residents in our district had heart surgery. After the surgery, this sweet couple realized the heart medication he needed would cost him $1,400 a month. On a fixed income, it was a frightening prospect to think this life saving drug might not be within their capacity to afford. While they did eventually get help to lower their final cost of this drug, their experience has inspired me to fight even harder for a reduction in cost of pharmaceutical drugs. Pharmaceutical lobbyists spend more in lobbying Washington than any other sector. It's time for a change.
