Federal court of appeals judge for the Second Circuit, Sonia Sotomayor, has been confirmed by the United States Senate to serve on the Supreme Court of the United States. Sotamayor is the first Supreme Court justice nominated by President Obama. She was confirmed by a vote of 68 - 31.

Sotamayor is the third woman to serve the nation's highest court, after Sandra Day O'Connor and current justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and the first Latina.[1]

"With this historic vote, the Senate has affirmed that Judge Sotomayor has the intellect, the temperament, the history, the integrity and the independence of mind to ably serve on our nation's highest court," the President said.[2]
