Three seats on the South Bend Community School Corporation Board of School Trustees were up for general election on November 4, 2014.
Incumbent Stanley F. Wruble defeated challengers Gene Eggleston, Oletha L. Jones and Carolyn Joy Peterson for the District 2 seat. District 5 board member Michelle Engel overcame a challenge from Hope Sniadecki, who is the daughter of District 3 member William Sniadecki. Incumbent Jay Caponigro ran unopposed and won re-election to his District 1 seat.[1][2]
About the district
South Bend Community School Corporation is located in St. Joseph County, Indiana. The county seat is South Bend. St. Joseph County is home to 266,709 residents, according to the United States Census Bureau.[3] In the 2011-2012 school year, South Bend Community School Corporation was the fourth-largest school district in Indiana and served 20,077 students.[4]
Demographics
St. Joseph County overperformed compared to the rest of Indiana in terms of higher education achievement in 2012. The United States Census Bureau found that 26.5 percent of St. Joseph County residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree compared to 23.0 percent for Indiana as a whole. The median household income for St. Joseph County was $44,989 compared to $48,374 for the state of Indiana. The percentage of people below poverty level for St. Joseph County was 16.4 percent while it was 14.7 percent for the state of Indiana.[3]

Voter and candidate information
The South Bend Board of School Trustees consists of seven members elected at-large or by specific geographic districts to four-year terms. There was no primary election, and the general election was held on November 4, 2014. Three seats were up for election in 2014.[1]
School board candidates had to file with their county elections department during the candidate filing period, which began on July 23, 2014, and ended on August 22, 2014. Write-in candidates also had to file by August 22, 2014. To vote in the 2014 general election, voters had to register by October 6, 2014.[6]

District 2 incumbent Stanley F. Wruble and District 5 incumbent Michelle Engel each received an endorsement from the St. Joseph County Chamber of Commerce ChamberPAC.[7]
