South Carolina Supreme Court's first black Chief Justice honored

South Carolina: Ernest A. Finney, Jr., the first black Chief Justice of the South Carolina Supreme Court, was honored for his services on September 3, 2011. He served the Supreme Court as an Associate Justice from 1985 until 1994, at which point he became the Chief Justice. Finney retired from the court in 2000 and was named interim president of South Carolina State University in 2002.[1]

In addition to being the first black person to serve as the state's Chief Justice, Finney became the first black man to serve the South Carolina Circuit Courts in 1976.[2]
