Mission
The mission statement of the South Dakota Department of Education reads:[1]

Superintendent
The current South Dakota Secretary of Education is Joe Graves (nonpartisan). Graves assumed office in 2023.
State Board of Education
The Board of Education consists of seven members appointed by the Governor with advice and consent of the South Dakota State Senate. Each member serves a term of four years. Board members are responsible for developing standards for high school graduation, school accreditation, teacher certification and continuing education for academic staff.[3]
