The South Dakota Repeal Medical Marijuana Initiative was not on the ballot in South Dakota as a veto referendum on November 5, 2024.
This referendum would have repealed the medical marijuana program that was approved by voters on November 3, 2020.[1]

Process in South Dakota
In South Dakota, the number of signatures required to qualify a veto referendum for the ballot is equal to 5 percent of the votes cast for governor in the previous gubernatorial election. Signatures must be submitted 90 days after the adjournment of the legislative session in which the targeted bill was passed.
The requirements to get a veto referendum certified for the 2024 ballot:
- Signatures: 17,509 valid signatures
- Deadline: 90 days following the legislative session's adjournment
Once the signatures have been gathered and filed, the secretary of state verifies the signatures using a random sample method.

- The South Dakota Secretary of State approved the initiative for circulation on September 7, 2023.[2]
