The South Dakota Secretary of Agriculture was an appointed executive position in the South Dakota state government. The secretary served as the head of the state Department of Agriculture.[1] On January 19, 2021, Gov. Kristi Noem (R) signed Executive Order 2021-03, which merged the Department of Agriculture and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources into the Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources, effective April 19, 2021.[2]
Officeholders
The last officeholder was Hunter Roberts. Roberts was appointed as interim secretary by Gov. Kristi Noem (R) on August 27, 2020, effective September 8 of that year. He replaced Lieutenant Gov. Larry Rhoden, who briefly served as interim secretary following Kim Vanneman's resignation.[3]

Chapter 38-1-1:
Department continued--Office--Service of process--Seal. The Department of Agriculture of the State of South Dakota is continued with the powers, duties, and jurisdiction enumerated in this code. It shall maintain a central office in the capitol at Pierre in rooms provided for the purpose, which shall be the official address of the department and the place for serving process or papers of any kind upon it. It shall have an official seal. |

Duties
The mission of the department was to "promote, protect, preserve and improve South Dakota Agriculture for today and tomorrow."[1] The statutory duty of the secretary was to, "under the general direction and control of the Governor, shall execute the powers and discharge the duties vested by law in the Department of Agriculture."[6]

In 2016, the secretary’s salary was increased to $107,064 according to the Council of State Governments.[11]
