The South Dakota judicial elections of 2010 consisted of a Primary Election on June 8, 2010 and a General Election on June 29, 2010.
Overview
A Chief Justice and four Associate Justices appointed by the Governor of South Dakota and then selected from five different appointment districts compose the South Dakota Supreme Court. All justices have to face a nonpolitical retention election three years after their first appointment and then every eight years after that first retention election.
As of 2010, there were no Supreme Court judges up for election in the state of South Dakota.
In the state of South Dakota there are seven judicial circuits with 38 circuit judges. Voters of the district of which they reside in vote judges to office in a nonpartisan election to eight-year terms or the judges are appointed by the Governor. The presiding circuit judge is appointed by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of South Dakota.
