A South El Monte Sales Tax, Measure R ballot question was on the November 2, 2010 ballot for voters in the City of South El Monte in Los Angeles County. It was approved.
Measure R added a one-half cent sales and use tax on goods and services sold within the city.
South El Monte had a $10 million annual operating budget in 2010.[1]
A simple majority vote was required for approval.

Text of measure
The question on the ballot:
| Measure R: To offset severe state budget cuts and prevent drastic cuts to sheriffs' deputies patrols, pothole and street repairs, youth gang and drug prevention, after school programs, senior services, storm drain maintenance, graffiti removal, parks, recreation and general City services, shall an ordinance be adopted to enact a one-half cent transaction and use tax in the City of South El Monte, subject to annual independent audits, public expenditure reports and local use of all funds?[2] |
Opposition
The editorial board of the Pasadena Star News was opposed to Measure R.[3]
They said, "Clearly the City Council is still reluctant to slash spending close to home. Outrageously, it allocates for each council member a car allowance of $650 a month. You can make payments on, let's see, a 2011 Mercedes-Benz C-Class C300 sport sedan for that luxury-sized monthly gift from taxpayers. (Mayor Louie Aguinaga notes that he only accepts $550 a month for a car - he'll have to lease a 2010 model.)"[4]
