Ballot question

The following question appeared on the ballot:[1]

Shall an ordinance be adopted that increases the amount of transaction and use tax from one half (1/2) percent to one (1) percent, with the increased revenue derived from the one half (1/2) percent increase to be devoted to the public purpose as determined by the companion advisory vote?[2]

Impartial analysis

The following impartial analysis of the measure was prepared by the office of the South Lake Tahoe City Attorney:

A BALLOT MEASURE TO INCREASE THE TRANSACTION AND USE TAX ONE HALF (1/2) PERCENT

Measure U has been placed on the ballot by the City Council of the City of South Lake Tahoe. This measure, if approved, will increase the Transaction and Use Tax within the City limits from one half (1/2) percent to one (1) percent. This general tax can be used for any purpose and the City Council has placed three advisory measures on the ballot to obtain the public’s direction on the spending priority for the increased revenue. The increase in transaction and use tax will apply to all non-exempt sales transactions.

Financial Impact

The tax is estimated to generate approximately Two Million Five Hundred Thousand dollars ($2,500,000.00) annually.

Effect of the Measure

A “Yes” vote will increase the Transaction and Use Tax by one half (1/2) percent to a total of one (1) percent. A “No” vote will not increase the Transaction and Use Tax. [2]
