Four seats on the South San Antonio Independent School District Board of Trustees were up for general election on November 4, 2014. Districts 1, 4 and 6 were up for re-election. There was a special election for District 7, the seat vacated by resigned board member JoeJo Savage. Two candidates, Stacey Estrada and Bill Hernandez, filed for his seat, which Estrada won.

In the District 1 race, incumbent Rose Marie Martinez lost her seat to challenger Angelina Osteguin. There were two candidates in the District 4 race, Arlene Vela and Leticia Guerra, since incumbent Julie Ponce did not file for re-election. Guerra won the open seat. District 6 incumbent Helen Madla won re-election unopposed.

South San Antonio Independent School District is located in Bexar County, Texas. The county seat is San Antonio. Bexar County was home to 1,822,154 residents in 2013, according to the United States Census Bureau.[1] In the 2012-2013 school year, South San Antonio Independent School District was the 107th-largest school district in Texas and served 9,842 students.[2]

Demographics

Bexar County underperformed in comparison to the rest of Texas in terms of higher education achievement in 2013. The United States Census Bureau found that 26.3 percent of Bexar County residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree compared to 26.7 percent for Texas as a whole. The median household income in Bexar County was $50,112 compared to $51,900 for the state of Texas. The poverty rate in Bexar County was 17.6 percent, the same rate for the entire state.[1]

Voter and candidate information

The South San Antonio ISD Board of Trustees consists of seven members elected to four-year terms, and serve by specific geographic district. There was no primary election, and the general election was held on November 4, 2014. Four seats were up for election in 2014.[4]

Candidates began filing nominating petitions on July 19, 2014. The filing deadline for school board candidates to get on the ballot in the general election was August 18, 2014.[5]
