Five of the nine seats on the Spartanburg County School District 6 Board of Trustees in South Carolina were up for at-large general election on November 7, 2017. All five incumbents filed for re-election. Board members Mike Crook, Michael Forrester, Mary Lou Hightower, Kevin Harrison, and Christie Johnson ran for the seats unopposed. Newcomers J. Lynn Harrill and Deonn Yates II originally filed for the board, but both withdrew their candidacies.[1]

Voter and candidate information
The Spartanburg School District 6 Board of Trustees is composed of nine at-large members serving four-year terms. Elections are held in November in odd-numbered years.
In order to get on the ballot for a South Carolina school board election, candidates had to be 18 years old, residents of the county and/or district at the time of the election, and registered to vote. The filing deadline for this school board election was July 15, 2017.[2]
To vote in South Carolina, one must be a citizen of the United States, a resident of South Carolina, and at least 18 years old by the time of the next election. Citizens may register to vote in person at a county board of voter registration or by downloading and completing a form and mailing, faxing, or emailing it to a county voter registration office. The deadline to register to vote in this election was October 7, 2017.[3]

Spartanburg County School District 6 is located in Spartanburg County, which is in northwestern South Carolina. The seat of county government is Spartanburg. Spartanburg County was home to an estimated 301,463 residents between 2010 and 2016, according to the United States Census Bureau.[7] The district was the 20th-largest school district in the state in the 2014-2015 school year and served 11,147 students.[8]
Demographics
Spartanburg County underperformed in comparison to South Carolina as a whole in terms of higher education attainment from 2011 to 2015. The United States Census Bureau found that 22.7 percent of county residents aged 25 years and older had obtained a bachelor's degree or higher, compared to 25.8 percent of all state residents. The median household income in the county was $43,907, while it was $45,483 for the entire state. County residents lived below the poverty level at a rate of 15.0 percent, while that rate was 16.6 percent for all state residents.[7]
