One seat on the Springdale Public Schools Board of Directors was up for general election on September 16, 2014. Zone 3 incumbent Kathy McFetridge won re-election against challenger Henry Pudder Hudson.[1]

Springdale Public Schools is located in Washington and Benton counties.

Springdale Public Schools is primarily located in Washington County in Arkansas. A small portion of the district is in Benton County. It is located northwest of the state capital, Little Rock. Washington County was home to approximately 216,410 residents in 2013 according to estimates by the United States Census Bureau. In the 2011-2012 school year, Springdale Public Schools was the second-largest school district in Arkansas and served 19,976 students.[2]

Demographics

Washington County overperformed compared to the rest of Arkansas in terms of higher education achievement in 2012. The United States Census Bureau found that 28 percent of Washington County residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree compared to only 19.8 percent for Arkansas as a whole. The median household income for the county was $41,429 compared to $40,531 statewide. The poverty rate in Washington County was 19.5 percent compared to 18.7 percent for the entire state.[2]

Voter and candidate information

The Springdale Public Schools Board of Education consists of seven members who are elected at-large to staggered five-year terms. While elected at-large, candidates run for office by ward or zone.[6] There was no primary election, and the general election was held on September 16, 2014.[7]

School board candidates had to file with the Washington County Elections Commission during the filing period from July 1, 2014, to July 8, 2014. Voters had to register by August 17, 2014, to vote in the election on September 16, 2014. Voters could apply for absentee voting starting on July 18, 2014. Requests submitted online or by mail had to be received by September 9, 2014, while in-person applications could be made until September 15, 2014. Early voting ran from September 9, 2014, to September 15, 2014.[8]

Funding

No contributions or expenditures for either campaign were reported as of September 10, 2014, according to the Arkansas Secretary of State.[10]

40.5 Mill School Tax

The total tax rate proposed below includes the uniform rate of tax (the "Statewide Uniform Rate") to be collected on all taxable property in the State and remitted to the State Treasurer pursuant to Amendment No. 74 to the Arkansas Constitution to be used solely for maintenance and operation of schools in the State. As provided in Amendment No. 74, the Statewide Uniform Rate replaces a portion of the existing rate of tax levied by this School District and available for maintenance and operation of schools in this School District. The total proposed school tax levy of 40.5 mills includes 25.0 mills specifically voted for general maintenance and operation and 15.5 mills voted for debt service previously voted as a continuing levy pledged for the retirement of existing bonded indebtedness. The surplus revenues produced each year by debt service millage may be used by the District for other school purposes.

The total proposed school tax levy of 40.5 mills represents the same rate presently being collected.
