One of the seven seats on the Springdale Public Schools school board was up for general election on September 20, 2016. Incumbent Kevin Ownbey was the sole candidate to file in the race and he won re-election unopposed.[1]

The Springdale school board consists of seven members who are elected at large to staggered five-year terms. While elected at large, candidates run for office by ward or zone.[2] One seat was up for general election on September 20, 2016. There was no primary election.[3]

Individuals interested in running for the school board had to be at least 18 years of age and registered to vote. Candidates were required to gather petition signatures from at least 20 voters registered in the school district. This petition of candidacy had to be submitted to the Arkansas Secretary of State by June 12, 2016. School board candidates also had to reside in the school district and could not have a record of felony conviction.[4]

Springdale Public Schools is a school district located in northwest Arkansas in Springdale. The city lies within portions of both Washington County and Benton County. According to the United States Census Bureau, Springdale was home to 63,159 residents between 2010 and 2015.[8] The district was the second-largest school district in the state in the 2013–2014 school year and served 21,369 students.[9]

Springdale outperformed Arkansas as a whole in terms of median household income, educational attainment, and poverty rate. The city's median household income was $52,386, compared to a statewide median income of $41,264. The Census Bureau found that 27.6 percent of Springdale residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree or higher, compared to 20.6 percent for Arkansas as a whole. The city's poverty rate was 14.0 percent, compared to 18.9 percent for the entire state.[8]
