[1]
This amendment was defeated, but it would have made it that the City Council could amend proposed petitions, it would have also limited the time limit for gathering signatures to one year as well as requiring staff review of the proposed ballot language.[2]
Opponents
Several group who had been involved with recent petition drives in the city had come out against the this proposed amendment which would amend the petition process in the city as well as the Initiative amendment. Some had stated that the changes would limit the people's rights to petition and give their voice to the government.[3]
Proponents
Those in favor, including some council members, had stated that they saw the changes as making the petition process more difficult but not impossible. If a group wants to get an issue on the ballot it would just take more effort and coordination with groups.[3]
