2014
The August 26, 2014, general election in Hillsborough County featured three seats up for election. The general election determined if candidates for each seat could garner a majority of the vote total. Because no candidate received 50 percent plus one of the general election votes in any of the districts, the top two vote recipients in all three races advanced to the runoff election on November 4, 2014.
District 6 incumbent April Griffin was the only board member to seek re-election and faced a challenge from seven other candidates in the general election. Griffin advanced to the runoff election with challenger Dipa Shah.
Newcomers Sally Harris, Michelle Popp Shimberg and Michael Weston ran for the District 2 seat. Shimberg and Harris advanced to the runoff election. Terry Kemple, Dee Prether and Melissa Snively sought election to the District 4 seat. Snively and Temple advanced to the runoff election for the open seat.

2014
Hahn's campaign website listed the following themes for the 2014 race:
“ |
Student Achievement Student achievement should be our number one priority! Providing educators with strategies in reading, math and cultural competence, as well as promoting community and parental involvement, increasing school choice options, recruiting a highly qualified workforce and creating multiple pathways to graduation by increasing technical certificates are measures I would take to reduce the achievement gap and improve student outcomes. Fiscal Responsibility Fiscal responsibility is a key to being able to provide an education that will meet the needs of all children and allow them to reach their potential. We need to maximize the dollars that are spent in the classroom. To do this we need to ensure that resources are spent adequately, which involves the following:
School Board Leadership The Hillsborough County School Board represents the 8th largest school district in the nation and should do so with the utmost professionalism. The members of the school board should model the leadership and high standards expected from all school district personnel. Collaboration is vital to creating effective schools and I believe that we need a new set of approaches that would promote effective teamwork and intensely collaborative practices. School Safety Providing an environment to ensure that our students, teachers, administrators and staff are safe is a priority for me. We must make certain that students have the best learning environment possible because without it, students are unable to focus on learning the skills needed for a successful education and future. We must provide leadership in reassuring students, staff and parents that schools are safe places for children. Exceptional Student Education The fundamental purposes of special education are the same as those of general education: the optimal development of the student as a skillful, free and purposeful person, able to plan and manage his or her own life and reach his or her highest potential as an individual and member of society. The administrators, teachers and other school personnel must have appropriate support and technical assistance available to them to enable them to fulfill their responsibilities. And finally, essential to the appropriate placement of the child with an exceptionality is the preparation of the environment for that child through pre-service and/or in-service training of staff and any other necessary accomodations, curriculum and, most importantly, safety. Science, Technology, Engineering & Math Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) are vital to the future of our country, our region and our children. Students should be advised on the merits of taking as many math and science courses in middle and high school as possible. This will ensure they are prepared to participate in today’s high tech workforce and the jobs of tomorrow. Human Resources The employees of the Hillsborough County School District constitute the most important resource for providing a quality educational program for the students in our community. Recognizing this, it should be the goal of the school district to provide and maintain appropriate staffing services that will recruit, select and retain the best qualified employees available. Moreover, school district support for teachers, administrators and staff is critical to providing an environment which optimizes performace and satisfaction. Home, School & Community Partnerships Family and community engagement is a vital part of a truly successful school system. But it rarely just happens – it must be intentionally designed. Schools should develop partnerships with businesses, civic organizations and other community groups to promote adult participation in children’s education and to maximize the resources available to support learning.[3] |
