Primary: She was successful in the Democratic primary on September 9, 2014, receiving 59.7 percent of the vote. She competed against Richard J. Sherwood.
General: She defeated Richard J. Sherwood in the general election on November 4, 2014, receiving 79.3 percent of the vote.

Education
Pettit received a B.A. in English from Vassar College and a J.D. from the Albany Law School.[5]
Career
Pettit was elected judge of the Albany County Surrogate's Court in 2014. She began working for the court in 1999, first as a law clerk to former Judge Raymond Marinelli, and then as the chief clerk of the court. Prior to that, she worked as an attorney in private practice.[5]
