Stan Smith (South Carolina)
Stan Smith was the Libertarian candidate in the special election for the South Carolina State Senate, District 16. Smith ran to fill the vacancy created when Michael Mulvaney (R) was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in the November 2 general election. Smith also ran for District 48 of the South Carolina House of Representatives in the 2010 general election.
Smith was born in Johannesburg, South Africa in 1950. Due to violence in South Africa, Smith's family moved to the United States. In 1967, Smith took the oath of citizenship. He went on to graduate from George Mason University and earn a Master's Degree from Virginia Commonwealth University. He is a member of the American Academy of Psychotherapists. In 1978, he became President of Human Patterns, consulting on issues ranging from conflict resolution to leadership development. He is involved in the Citizen's Democracy Corps, which promotes democratic leadership worldwide.[1]

- "Drop excessive regulation and unnecessary licensing for small business to help create jobs and new start-up companies."

- "Developers should pay their own way instead of drawing upon state and local funds for their project’s infrastructure."

- "Eliminate ‘pork’ by requiring every legislative bill to be for a single issue and be written in clear English."
- "Require a two-thirds majority to override a Governor’s veto – currently an override can be accomplished in a session with just a lone legislator in attendance."
- "Set a limit of no more than two terms in any state elected office."
Elections
2011
Smith was defeated by Greg Gregory (R) in the April 12, 2011 special election. Keith Brann (D) also ran for the seat.[2][3][4]
2010
Smith was defeated by incumbent Ralph W. Norman (R) in the general election on November 2.[5].
