The 2014 election for Phoenix Union High School's Governing Board was canceled due to a lack of contested races. While Benjamin Fisher filed to challenge Ward 1 incumbent Randy D. Schiller in his bid for a second-term on the board, he later withdrew from the race leaving Schiller unopposed. Newcomers Stanford Prescott in Ward 2 and Stephanie Parra in Ward 3 ran for open seats as Richard M. Gallego, the incumbent for Ward 2, and Amy Kobeta, the incumbent for Ward 3, had not filed to run for re-election as of August 25, 2014. Incumbents Laura Pastor and Linda Abril ran for re-election in Wards 4 and 5, respectively.[1]

Results

The Maricopa County Education Service Agency recommended that the election be canceled and that the unopposed candidates be appointed to the governing board by the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors.[2] The board of supervisors elected to do so at their September 10, 2014, meeting.[3] Prescott was appointed to his first term on the governing board.

Funding

Prescott reported $2,993.53 in contributions and $2,968.45 in expenditures to the Maricopa County Recorder's office, which left his campaign with $25.08 on hand on September 15, 2014.[4]

Campaign themes

2014

Prescott provided the following statement on his Facebook campaign page:

I am running for the Phoenix Union Governing Board because our students deserve an equal opportunity to a quality education. Right now, our students are being left behind. They do not have the same opportunities as other students, nor are they always prepared to seize these opportunities when they occur. As a South Mountain High graduate and Phoenix native, I know that our students can achieve great things when properly supported. As a community organizer, I have trained students in leadership, allowing them to change their communities. On the Governing Board, I will encourage academic excellence, protect our students, and find new savings through sustainability. I need your support to accomplish this. Please support today with a donation, volunteering, or voting Prescott for Phoenix Union.[6]
