Illinois: Yesterday, the Illinois Supreme Court announced the appointment of Kevin W. Lyons to the Illinois Tenth Judicial Circuit Court. Lyons will succeed Richard E. Grawey, who since his retirement in 2010 was temporarily replaced by Glenn H. Collier. Lyons will join the court on August 1, 2011.[1]

The new judge has spent the majority of his career as a state attorney in Peoria County. Since 1988, he has been elected six times. Of his transition to the court, he said, "My legal career has always involved the courtrooms of Illinois and I’m privileged the Chief Justice and the Supreme Court are providing me an opportunity to continue there in a new and different role. Peoria County voters took a chance on me to be their state’s attorney 23 years ago and it’s been the job of my dreams."[1]

Lyons appointment will expire on December 31, 2012, which means he must run for election to the seat next year. He has already announced his intention to do so.[1]
