State governments set to shift toward Republicans in today's vote
November 2, 2010
By Leslie Graves
Which political party will have a dominant position in the 50 state governments after today's election? One way to measure this is by looking at partisan control in five key state government positions:
Heading into the November 2, 2010 election, the Democratic Party holds 145, or 58%, of the available 250 positions, while the Republican Party holds 95, or 38.8%. 8, or 3.2%, are "other."
However, with the Republican Party expected to pick up as many as 6 gubernatorial seats, 6 state Attorney General positions, 7 Secretary of State positions, and between 10-15 state legislative chambers, at the end of the night, the Republican Party may control about 140-145 positions, while the Democratic Party may control around 95-100.
