State judge nominated for federal judgeship
October 13, 2009
Vermont: State judge for the Vermont Superior Courts and the Vermont District Courts Christina Reiss has been nominated by President Obama to a lifetime seat on the District of Vermont. If confirmed by the Senate, Reiss would take the seat vacated by Garvan Murtha when he assumed senior status. She would be the first woman to serve the District of Vermont federal court.[1][2] Reiss was recommended to President Obama by Senator Leahy.[3]
Reiss earned her Bachelor’s degree from St. Michael’s College in Vermont and her law degree from the University of Arizona College of Law in 1989. After her graduation from law school, Judge Reiss served as law clerk for the Maine Supreme Judicial Court. After that, Reiss was in private practice specializing in several areas including media, land use, business, employment and federal criminal law until her 2004 appointment to the Vermont State judiciary.[4]
Reiss has three children from 7 to 18. Her father is the late St. Michael’s professor John Reiss. John Reiss was the victim of a fatal shooting at his home Essex, VT when an apparently stray target practice bullet killed him.[5]
