In 2019, 538 seats were up for election across seven of the nation's 99 state legislative chambers. As a result of the elections, control of 33 seats (6%) flipped from one political party to another.
The Virginia State Senate and the Virginia House of Delegates flipped control in 2019 from Republican to Democratic. Democrats held their majority in the New Jersey General Assembly. Republicans held their majorities in the Louisiana State Senate, Louisiana House of Representatives, Mississippi State Senate, and the Mississippi House of Representatives.
Louisiana had 13 seats flip, the most of any state. Eight of those seats flipped from Democratic to Republican, three flipped from independent to Republican, and two flipped from Republican to Democratic. Ten seats flipped in Mississippi, eight in Virginia, and two in New Jersey.
