Before the 2019 state legislative elections, Democrats controlled 37 state legislative chambers, while Republicans controlled 61. In the Alaska House, there was a power-sharing agreement between the parties as part of a coalition. Following the elections, and going into 2020, Democrats controlled 39 chambers and Republicans controlled 59. The Alaska House maintained its power-sharing agreement.
