Candidate Connection

Stefan Galen Strek participated in Ballotpedia's candidate survey on April 6, 2018. The survey questions appear in bold, and Stefan Galen Strek's responses follow below.[2]

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

1) Defending the Second Amendment, eliminating anti-gun legislation.

2) Veterans' healthcare, Veterans deserve access to non-VA doctors so their surgery and healthcare can be prioritized.
3) Protecting Foster Children and Adults in Foster Care.[3][4]

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?

Defending the Second Amendment because it makes America the Greatest Nation on Earth. Promoting Veterans' healthcare because they have made sacrifices for America which deserve to be rewarded. Protecting Foster Children and Adults in Foster Care because I care about people in need. Lowering Taxes because the government wastes too much money which is taken from working-class Citizens.Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many[4]

Ballotpedia also asked the candidate a series of optional questions. Stefan Galen Strek answered the following:

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?

Zachary Taylor, he's a direct relative on my mom's side and was responsible for winning the Mexican-American War. His actions secured our Southern Border and I hope to continue his legacy of American achievement.[4]
Is there a book, essay, film, or something else you would recommend to someone who wants to understand your political philosophy?
Books: 1984, Farenheit 451, The Hobbit, Lord of the Rings Movies: The Patriot, The Matrix, The Hobbit, Lord of the Rings[4]
What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?
Transparency, charisma, attitude, sincerity, passion.[4]
What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?
Transparency, charisma, attitude, sincerity, passion.[4]
What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?
To advocate for the beliefs of the people in Oregon's 4th District and promote those values to America as a whole.[4]
What legacy would you like to leave?
To inspire more people to be active in politics, to return control of the government from political elitists back to average Americans.[4]
What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?
I remember everything since going to pick out a dog for my big sister's birthday when I was 4 years old.[4]
What was your very first job? How long did you have it?
My first job outside family work was working for the University of Oregon as a Student Food Service Worker. I started in 2008, when I was 17 years old and kept the job until December 2016.[4]
What happened on your most awkward date?
Ended up in a long-term relationship with a girl I ended up living with.[4]
What is your favorite holiday? Why?
Easter, Christmas, Thanksgiving, 4th of July, my birthday, I just always love any excuse to have a good time.[4]
What is your favorite book? Why?
The Silmarillion, it covers a fantastic history made up by J.R.R. Tolkien explaining the world of The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings. The writing is just beautiful.[4]
If you could be any fictional character, who would you want to be?
Cloud Strife from the videogame Final Fantasy VII, because he helped lots of people, never let his friends down and worked hard to protect Women.[4]
What is your favorite thing in your home or apartment? Why?
The iron spiral staircase which leads to my 300 sq/ft bathroom that has a classic 19th century design candy-red clawfoot bathtub.[4]
What was the last song that got stuck in your head?
Fur Elise, it never stops.[4]
What is something that has been a struggle in your life?
Accepting my failure to give my friend who shot himself a reason to live for, my failure to save my grandfather's life, and my failure to give the women who have loved me everything they wanted.[4]
What qualities does the U.S. House of Representatives possess that makes it unique as an institution?
The ability to write or dismantle laws of the United States of America. The ability to truly speak as Representatives of the populations from across America.[4]
Do you believe that it’s beneficial for representatives to have previous experience in government or politics?
No, career politicians are the single greatest threat to American Democracy. Our Constitution was written to give average working-class Americans the chance to Represent American Values in our government.[4]
What do you perceive to be the United States’ greatest challenges as a nation over the next decade?
Restoring America's strategic position after being so handicapped by the negligence of Obama's failed policies which gave money and resources to our enemies.[4]
If you are not a current representative, are there certain committees that you would want to be a part of?
House Committee on Veteran's Affairs, U.S. House Science, Space, and Technology Committee, House Armed Services Committee, House Budget Committee, House Foreign Affairs Committee, Homeland Security Committee, Joint Committee on Taxation, House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence.[4]
Do you believe that two years is the right term length for representatives?
Yes, two years should be long enough to get a bill drafted, presented and passed. Most Congressional Representatives are just lazy and incompetent because all their work to get into office was performed by private interest groups.[4]
What are your thoughts on term limits?
They're called elections.[4]
What process do you favor for redistricting?
A fair and balanced redistricting process which prohibits gerrymandering must be implemented.[4]
If you are not currently a member of your party’s leadership in the U.S. House of Representatives, would you be interested in joining the leadership? If so, in what role?
Yes, Speaker of the House.[4]
Is there a particular representative, past or present, whom you want to model yourself after?
Benjamin Franklin[4]
Both sitting representatives and candidates for office hear many personal stories from the residents of their district. Is there a story that you’ve heard that you found particularly touching, memorable, or impactful?
My most impactful story from a resident was a Veteran who said that nobody who goes to the VA and gives them anything less than a 10 on the 0-10 pain scale receives surgery. Veterans deserve access to surgery. We have an obligation to reward their service with good quality of life.[4]
