Stephan P. Mickle was a federal judge with the United States District Court for the Northern District of Florida. He joined the court in 1998 after being nominated by President Bill Clinton (D). From 2009 to 2011, he served as the district court's chief judge. Mickle assumed senior status on June 22, 2011. His service ended on January 26, 2021, upon his death.[1]

Early life and education

A native of New York, New York, Mickle earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Florida in 1965 and his master's degree in education from the University of Florida in 1966. Mickle earned his J.D. from the University of Florida College of Law in 1970.[1]

Mickle was nominated by President Bill Clinton on January 27, 1998, to a seat on the United States District Court for the Northern District of Florida vacated by Maurice Paul. The American Bar Association rated Mickle Substantial Majority Qualified, Minority Not Qualified for the nomination. Hearings on Mickle's nomination were held before the Senate Judiciary Committee on April 29, 1998, and his nomination was reported by U.S. Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) on May 7, 1998. Mickle was confirmed on a voice vote of the U.S. Senate on May 14, 1998, and he received his commission on May 22, 1998. Mickle served as the district court's chief judge from 2009 to 2011. He elected to take senior status beginning on June 22, 2011. He was succeeded in this position by Mark E. Walker.[1][2][3]
