Stephen N. Limbaugh, Jr. is a federal Article III judge on senior status for the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri. He joined the court in 2008 after being nominated by President George W. Bush. (R) Limbaugh assumed senior status on August 1, 2020.

Matthew Schelp was nominated by President Donald Trump (R) to succeed Limbaugh. Schelp was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on February 12, 2020.

Early life and education

Limbaugh received his bachelor's degree in history from Southern Methodist University in December 1973, his J.D. from Southern Methodist University School of Law in December 1976 and his Master of Laws in Judicial Process in May 1998 from the University of Virginia School of Law.[1]

Professional career

Justice Limbaugh was a partner in law firm of Limbaugh, Limbaugh, Russell & Syler, P.C., Cape Girardeau from January 1983 through August 1987; prior to this he was the prosecuting attorney of Cape Girardeau County (January 1979 through December 1982) and an associate in law firm of Limbaugh, Limbaugh & Russell from May 1977 to November 1978.[1]

Judicial career

Eastern District of Missouri

On the recommendation of U.S. Senator Kit Bond, Limbaugh was nominated by President George W. Bush (R) on December 6, 2007, to a seat vacated by Donald Stohr as Donald Stohr assumed senior status. Limbaugh was confirmed by the Senate on June 10, 2008, on unanimous consent of the Senate and received commission on August 1, 2008. He assumed senior status on August 1, 2020. Limbaugh was succeeded by Matthew Schelp.[1]

Missouri Supreme Court

Limbaugh was a justice of the Missouri Supreme Court. He was appointed to the court in August 1992, and subsequently retained in November 1994 and November 2006 for 12-year terms.

Limbaugh served as Chief Justice of the Missouri Supreme Court from July 2001 through June 2003. Prior to his appointment to the Supreme Court, he served as a circuit judge in the 32nd Judicial Circuit of Missouri from September 1987 to August 1992.[1]
