Stephen S. Mitchell was a bankruptcy court judge for the Eastern District of Virginia. He was appointed on December 12, 1994, and reappointed for an additional 14-year term in 2008. He retired on August 31, 2011. Mitchell was succeeded by Judge Brian F. Kenney.[1][2][3]

Education

Mitchell earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Virginia and a Bachelor of Laws degree from Yale University.[4]

Career

Prior to joining the court, Mitchell served on active duty with the U.S. Marine Corps in a variety of legal positions, from prosecutor, to military judge, to congressional liaison action officer. He later transitioned his practice to the law firm of McKinley, Schmidtlein & Mitchell, where he remained for 15 years before joining the bench.[3]
