Elections for the Alabama State Senate took place in 2014. A primary election took place on June 3, 2014; a runoff election took place where necessary on July 15, 2014. The general election was held on November 4, 2014. The signature filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in this election was February 7, 2014. Stephen Sexton, Harry D'Olive, Jr., Danny B. Joyner, Greg Albritton and Jeff Peacock faced off in the Republican primary. Because no candidate received more than 50 percent of the vote, the top two vote-getters - Albritton and D'Olive - met in a runoff election, which Albritton won.[2] Incumbent George M. "Marc" Keahey (D) withdrew before the Democratic primary and party leaders chose Susan Smith (D) as a replacement on June 10, 2014.[3][4][5][6][7] Albritton then defeated Smith in the general election on November 4, 2014.[8]

Sexton's website highlighted the following campaign themes:[9]
- Jobs & Economic Development
- Excerpt: "Jobs enable hard working folks to buy those things needed to sustain life. Alabama has lost jobs to outsourcing and overseas factories paying below minimum wage. Those job losses have caused hardship and tough times in the lives of too many hard working Alabama families. It is time Alabama’s 22nd District reclaim jobs that will not only provide a level of confidence in the ability to provide the basic needs, but also jobs that allows for a lifestyle of buying homes and paying for a college education, not merely living from pay check to paycheck."
- Education
- Excerpt: "As your elected senator I will make an appointment with and talk with parent teacher organizations and Superintendents of Education about improving the process of education. The present and future needs for the educational and technological advancement of our children for future employment opportunities and lifelong achievements must be a priority. Where there is no Vision the people perish."
- Taxes
- Excerpt: "Unless we change our dependence on big government and taxes, we will become a state with less than desirable living conditions with a lifestyle of living off big government. We must not be dependent on others, but earn our own way and stop waiting for big government to pail us out."
- HealthCare
- Excerpt: "From the moment a person needs medical care to the time medical care is given, Alabamians deserve to have the best health care available. We have some of the best teaching hospitals in America. The University Of South Alabama Medical School is first class and we must continue to support future nurses, dentist, doctors and medical staff, ensuring Southwest Alabama has the best medical care available. We must encourage young Alabama students to enter into the medical field. Rural Alabamians must have the availability of first rate medical care."
- Illegal Immigrants
- Excerpt: "Illegal immigration – a crime in Alabama, lost jobs, additional health care cost our local hospitals can’t afford, additional cost to our public schools that are already burdened with unfunded government mandates. It is a matter of national security. If folks want to come to Alabama, we welcome them as neighbors, but do it legally."
- Natural Resources and Renewable Green Energy
- Excerpt: "Southwest Alabama has vast renewable resources that have provided jobs for many years. The future for Southwest Alabama can be seen in its forestry and waterways. Our children and this state deserve an environment that is clean, safe and enjoyable. I love to walk through God’s creation and enjoy the beauty of nature. We must learn to respect God’s creation through green energy and recycling. We must look at different energy sources as a way to have cheaper energy."
- Faith Based Initiatives
- Excerpt: "My Proposal: Knowledge is Power. Encourage faith based institutions to teach and train their members in the areas of finance, medical and health improvement."
- Gun Ownership
- Excerpt: "I am a gun owner and a member of the NRA. Gun ownership is a right. It is our right to defend ourselves from criminals who would invade our homes. I will defend that right against liberal left wing democrats who are determined to take your guns away from you."
- Veterans/Military
- Excerpt: "I believe in a strong military. It is an honor to have served in the greatest Army in modern history. As a Veteran, member of the VFW and American Legion I will support Alabama Veterans benefits. Those who volunteer to serve deserve the support of every citizen in Alabama and America. Military assets are an added value to Alabama. Alabama must be prepared to increase the readiness of Alabama, to add more military assets, increasing job opportunities through BRAC."
- Social Security
- Excerpt: "Every person needs the comfort of knowing that after retirement, there will be some kind of financial security for the many years of hard work to provide the essential needs of life. But Social Security is not the answer to all the financial problems. Alabamians must learn to save and invest for the future. Retirement should be a time of reflection of past accomplishments, not a time to worry if the medical bills will be paid or can I buy a loaf of bread? The US government must learn how to serve Americans w/o dipping into the Social Security funds hard working Alabamians pay into the system. Social Security is not the only answer to financial freedom. I will coordinate and facilitate a program to educate and teach Alabamians how to have financial security starting in the home."
- Alabama Medicaid
- Excerpt: "Medicaid is a jointly funded, Federal-State health care program for persons who are financially eligible. Medicaid provides care for acute medical needs, rehabilitation, and long-term care at home and in nursing homes. Alabama must continue to help who cannot afford quality health care to sustain life as needed. We must never push to the side those who paved the way for us."
