Stephen Spomer
Stephen L. Spomer was a justice on the Illinois Fifth District Appellate Court. He was assigned to this position in July of 2005.[1] Although served as an appellate judge, he was retained to his position on the 1st Circuit Court every 6 years. He was most recently retained in 2008.[2] He retired from the court on November 30, 2014.[3]
Education
Judge Spomer received a B.A. in history from Tulane University in 1971 and a J.D. degree from the Tulane Law School in 1974.[1]
Career
Judge Spomer began his career in 1974 as a private practice lawyer at his parents' law firm of Spomer and Spomer. He worked in this position until 1978. He also worked as a public defender for Johnson and Massac Counties from 1974 to 1976. He was elected a Massac County state's attorney in 1976. He was elected to the circuit court in Alexander County (1st Circuit Court) in 1978. He served as the chief judge of this court from 1992 to 1998. He joined the appellate court in 2005.[1]
