Steve Canavero is the acting Nevada Superintendent of Public Instruction. Canavero assumed office on May 14, 2025.
Canavero was appointed as acting Nevada Superintendent of Public Instruction on May 14, 2025, by Governor of Nevada Joe Lombardo (R) to replace Jhone Ebert (nonpartisan).[1]
Canavero also served as interim superintendent after former officeholder Dale Erquiaga resigned on August 20, 2015.[2] Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval (R) selected Canavero to be Erquiaga's permanent replacement on February 9, 2016.[3][4]
Biography
Canavero worked as a teacher, dean of students, principal, and director of accountability in the California state charter schools. Upon moving to Nevada, Canavero continued his work with charter schools, establishing the office of charter schools within the Nevada Department of Education. Gov. Sandoval then appointed Canavero to serve as the state’s director of the Public Charter School Authority. Canavero also served as the deputy superintendent of public instruction.[5][6]
Outside of state government, Canavero served as the leader of the National Association of Charter School Authorizers (NACSA) in 2012. According to the organization's website, NACSA aims to "achieve the establishment and operation of quality charter schools through responsible oversight in the public interest."[5]

Canavero assumed the duties of superintendent on an interim basis after former superintendent Jhone Ebert resigned on May 14, 2025, following her selection as superintendent for Clark County Public Schools.[1]
Nevada Superintendent of Public Instruction (2015-2019)
Then-Deputy Superintendent Canavero assumed the duties of superintendent on an interim basis after former superintendent Dale Erquiaga resigned on August 20, 2015, in order to become the chief strategic officer in Gov. Sandoval's office.[2] After interviewing a number of candidates, Gov. Sandoval announced that he had selected Canavero to be Erquiaga's permanent replacement on February 9, 2016.[3] Canavero resigned on February 6, 2019.[4]
About the office
The Nevada Superintendent of Public Instruction is a state executive position in the Nevada state government.
The superintendent, appointed by the State Board of Education, oversees the Department of Education and implements policy agreed upon by the board.[7]
