Recall reports

An effort to recall Steve Freitas in Sonoma County, California, from his position as sheriff was launched in April 2017. The recall effort was initiated by a group called the Community Action Coalition.[1] Freitas resigned in July 2017, citing medical issues.[2]

Recall supporters

The Community Action Coalition listed its grounds for recall on the Recall Sheriff Freitas Facebook page. Below is the list:[3]

  1. Violating laws that protect the health of those in his custody, and discriminating against people of color, the homeless, and their encampments;
  2. Rejecting task force recommendations for changes in use-of-force policy, body cams, training in de-escalation practices, community-based policing, and failing to attend public Independent Office for Law Enforcement and Outreach Citizen’s Advisory Council of Sonoma County meetings when requested to;
  3. Exacerbating the already strained relationship between the Sheriff and our communities by promoting Erick Gelhaus (who killed Andy Lopez);
  4. Settling $2,000,000 of taxpayer’s money in lawsuits due to inadequate use-of-force policies, brutality against jail inmates, and other civil rights violations;
  5. Collaborating with Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who supports anti-immigrant policies, and meeting with Sessions on a taxpayer-funded trip;
  6. Supporting amendments to SB54 that remove language protecting immigrants from discrimination;
  7. Supporting legislation that aids unconstitutional Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activities, and collaborating with ICE by responding to their requests.[4]

Recall opponents

Freitas criticized the recall effort, citing its cost. County election officials said that the recall election would cost between $476,000 and $748,000. Freitas announced in March 2017 that he planned to retire when his term expired at the end of 2018. "Whether you support me or are a critic of my six years as sheriff, I will be leaving office," he said in a letter to the registrar of voters on March 30.[1][5]
