Heading into the election, Ballotpedia rated Maryland's U.S. Senate race as safely Democratic. In the U.S. Senate race in Maryland, incumbent Barbara Mikulski chose to retire, leaving the seat open in 2016. The election attracted a large number of Democratic, Republican and independent candidates. Chris Van Hollen (D) defeated Kathy Szeliga (R), Arvin Vohra (Libertarian), Margaret Flowers (Green), and several write-in candidates in the general election on November 8, 2016. Van Hollen defeated nine other Democrats to win the nomination, and Szeliga defeated 13 other Republicans in the primary. The primary elections took place on April 26, 2016.[2][3]

Campaign themes

2016

The following issues were listed on Gladstone's campaign website. For a full list of campaign themes, click here.

  • Understanding America's Capitalism: No candidate wishes to discuss our nation's economy with you. Sure, they’ll quote you job numbers, unemployment, what the DOW Jones is at, how much our GDP has changed, point out some successful businesses, and more. But none of them have the desire nor the capability to discuss our economy as a whole with you, the people. Truth be told, I really don’t have the capability or credibility to discuss it with you either. None of us running for the office of President are career economists with any sort of academic credentials on the topic.
  • Campaign Finance: America is built on a foundation of governmental distrust. The very hint of a possibility of corruption is viewed with extreme negativity. There could be an extremely legitimate reason for donating million's to a candidate's campaign. Maybe we're being overly cynical in thinking that an individual or group would donate that kind of money without expecting anything in return other than a "faithful representation of the people in said politician's district," as the Supreme Court's Citizens United decision puts it. The Court's opinion stated "ingratiation and access... are not corruption.
  • Education: Education is another hot topic in American politics, mainly due to the soaring costs of higher education. But there is more to education than college tuition. The purpose gets lost in discussions of money. What education is meant to teach us goes out the window when it comes to partisan politics in this day and age. Populism trumps correctness to the point where millions of Americans still believe President Obama is a Kenyan Muslim, no matter what proof otherwise might claim.
  • Energy Policy: America's energy policy is mired in a socio-economic battle unseen in recent history. Climate change, whether you believe it to be man-made or a natural cycle of the Earth, is real. The problems that is creates are real. We have an opportunity to curb those changes instead of adding to them. I would very much rather err on the side of caution than risk future generations simply because we could not get passed the "cost" factor.
  • Foreign Policy: We are all human beings. We are all born into this world with certain unalienable Rights, Rights that are intrinsic to one and all. Whether you were born into riches as the daughter of an American billionaire or born in poverty to a rape victim in Sudan, your humanity means you are equal to every other human being on the planet. You may be taller, shorter, fatter, skinnier, richer, poorer, gay, straight, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist or anything, but the unalienable Rights of mankind are what bind us all together.
