Career

Steve Green is president of Hobby Lobby and chairman of the board for the Museum of the Bible—a museum to be opened in 2017 in Washington, D.C., that is "dedicated to a scholarly and engaging presentation of the Bible's impact, history and narrative."[1] Green began work for the Museum of the Bible in 2012 when he purchased a 430,000 square foot building in Washington, D.C., for $50 million. The building's renovation is expected to cost $800 million, and the museum has received public support from former President George W. Bush (R).[2]

In 2009, Green began collecting biblical artifacts for scholarly engagement with the Bible and its history. The collection is now known as the Green Collection and is "one of the world's largest private collections of rare biblical texts and artifacts."[3]

Green also helped establish the Green Scholars Initiative in 2010. The Green Scholars Initiative, according to the organization's website, "allows the world’s leading textual scholars to research and produce scholarship on items in the Green Collection while mentoring students."[4] The Green Scholars Initiative was involved in crafting curriculum for a course called "The Book: The Bible’s History, Narrative and Impact," in an Oklahoma high school in 2014.[5] In December 2014 the school district abandoned the adoption of Green's course and said it would "review two other curricula in spring 2015 in the hopes that one may be selected for a 'History of the Bible' course at Mustang High School."[6]
