New Mexico held general elections for local judicial offices on November 8, 2016. A primary election took place on June 7, 2016. The filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in this election was March 8, 2016.[2] Steve Guthrie defeated Susan Wheatley in the Otero County Magistrate Court general election.[1]

Judges of the New Mexico Magistrate Courts are each elected to four-year terms.[3] The elections for this court are partisan contested elections. To serve on this court, a judge must be a qualified elector of the district and have a high school diploma or equivalent. In districts with a population greater than 200,000 people, a judge must also be licensed to practice law in New Mexico.[4]
