Campaign themes

2016

On his website, Johnson focused on three key themes he would address as governor:

  • Natural resources: Oregon must use more of the bountiful renewable resource of timber to pay vital state obligations. These include new infrastructure, education, maintenance of our bridges, basic police protection and more. Oregon must find a way to turn the litigation dollars being spent now into remediation, mitigation and renewal of timber exploitation.
  • Public education: Public education is one of the prime responsibilities of the state. Oregon is an embarrassment on graduation rates and basic literacy. There are proven methods to teach a child how to read write and do mathematics. We can do this. It is not rocket science, it is reading, writing and arithmetic! Smaller classes, less mandatory testing, less required record keeping for teachers, less intrusion by administration into the classroom and above all, shut the door and let the teacher teach to a reasonable number of students.
  • Jobs: No governor should ever again mouth the words, "we don't want your jobs, they don't fit the character of Oregon." Instead we should welcome employers who are willing to abide by our strong environmental requirements. Oregon needs all jobs. We cannot be so arrogant as to think clean jobs are all we need.[4][5]
