Steve Lange was a 2014 judicial candidate for the Llano County Justice Court in Texas.[1] The primary runoff between him and incumbent Linda Ballard ended in a tie, so the race was decided by coin toss. Lange lost the toss.[2]

Lange ran for election to the Llano County Justice Court.
Primary: He was successful in the Republican primary on March 4, 2014, receiving 18.8 percent of the vote. He competed against Linda Ballard, Shelly Comerford, Tim McCray, and Les Daugherty.
Runoff: Because no candidate received more than 50% of the vote, Lange faced Ballard in a runoff election on May 27, 2014. However, both candidates received exactly 371 votes, a tally that was verified by a mandatory recount. To determine the winner in this rare situation, Republican Chair Jim Simmons was directed by Texas law to officiate a "casting of lots." The candidates headed over to the courthouse gazebo, where Simmons flipped a Lincoln dollar. Lange, listed first on the ballot, called tails—but the coin came up heads in Ballard's favor, winning her the runoff and, since no Democratic candidates filed, the election.
