Steve Miller was born in Brooklyn, NY. He holds a PhD in chemistry from Georgetown University. Steve has worked for the Federal Environmental Protection Agency, was Director of Corporate Government Affairs for a Fortune 200 company, and co-founded two technology companies. In his 7 years in Wilmington, North Carolina he has served on three charitable Boards of Directors, volunteered at many locations, started a free SAT prep tutoring program and run for County Commissioner.
  • On January 6th I recognized how fragile our democracy is and I was inspired to run against our representative who voted to overturn the Electoral College results from two states.
  • I believe that ALL people, no matter their identifications or associations, deserve to have equal rights and equal opportunities protected by the Constitution .
  • I am committed to bringing opportunity and prosperity to our communities through better funding for education, health care and jobs.
The most important of my platforms is protecting the right to vote. There need to be federal standards to prevent states from passing restrictive voting laws. I am passionate about the future of biofuels, electric vehicles and renewable energy sources. Investing in our environmentally sustainable future will create jobs and help to mitigate climate change. I believe our health care system needs a public option, which will create a competitive insurance market and drive healthcare-related costs down. I want to see marijuana decriminalized federally such that it becomes a medical treatment option and generates valuable tax revenue. I believe firmly in a woman's right to chose and am against state laws which restrict access to abortion. I believe there need to be federal laws that lead to comprehensive police reform. The existing culture of discrimination and excessive force against people of color must be stopped. Lastly, and because none of these policies can be achieved without a strong respect for the institutions of government, I will uphold the rule of law and vow to preserve, protect and defend the constitution.
My first job after school was with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in 1973 when it was brand-new. I was a mid-level employee in the Planning Office when I was summoned to the Administrator’s (the head of the EPA) office to explain how catalytic converters might work in reducing auto pollution. I became a chief advisor to him on that technology and the entire issue of auto emissions control, as well as the removal of lead from gasoline. Ultimately, the Congressionally mandated emission standards (the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1970) were put in place and today virtually every gasoline powered vehicle employs this technology.
The representatives in the House are responsible for a more specific geographic and demographic constituency. This means that they can focus on a region with its unique issues and priorities. I will be able to travel in person and be more visible and accessible to the voters of the NC 7th District, because it covers the counties proximal to where I live. I will make constituent services a priority if elected to office.
I believe it is important to have some experience of the machinery and procedural aspects of their government office. After two years at the EPA, I left and started my own consulting firm. My clients included Federal Agencies, such as the EPA, the Department of Commerce, and the Energy Department and numerous private companies in the environmental technology industry. Among them was Corning, which manufactures a component for catalytic converters. I have had experience as an expert witness on scientific issues before various Congressional Committees. Eventually, I moved on to become Director of Corporate Government Marketing and Government Relations for a Fortune 150 company. From there, I helped to cofound two technology companies, one in biometrics and the other in the field of RFID. The latter company won a sole source contract to supply container tracking equipment and software for the entire U.S. military.
I believe the greatest threat to the United States are laws which seek to suppress the vote. The republicans are working hard to make voting difficult for large urban populations, predominately communities of color. Once a person's right to vote has been compromised by closing polling places, long lines, limited early voting hours and locations, and voter registration barriers then the government is no longer an honest representation of its constituents.
I believe compromise is essential to getting legislation passed. However, if the legislation is critical to protecting the rights of our citizens, then it may be required that a Democratic majority pass it without the cooperation of the Republican party.
