A vote about whether to recall Steve Ross from his position as a member of the city council of Las Vegas, Nevada, in Clark County took place on January 31st, 2012.[1] Ross retained his seat in the election.[2] The recall effort was launched in September 2011. In December 2011, local officials certified enough signatures to force a recall election.[3] Ross represents Ward 6.
Reasons for recall
Reasons given for supporting the recall included:
- Car dealer Joe Scala was forced to close his classic car dealership, resulting in the layoff of 30 workers, after Ross refused to support a request for a waiver to allow used car sales in an auto mall.[4]
- Ross accepted a City Council pay raise after saying he wouldn't.[4]
- Ross supported a casino location close to a YMCA.[4]
The Las Vegas Sun published an editorial voicing their opposition to the recall.[5]
Path to the ballot
1,084 valid signatures were required to force a recall election.[4]
In December 2011, recall organizers announced they had gathered 1,151 signatures.[6]
On December 21st, 2011, local officials announced that 1,105 signatures had been certified and that a recall election would take place within 50 days.[3] The recall election is scheduled to take place on January 31st, 2012.[1]
Early voting in the recall election began on January 26, 2012. Ross faced challenger Byron Goynes.[7]
Election results
With a 12.5% voter turnout, Ross defeated his opponent, Byron Goynes, with 70% of the vote.[2]
